    Winch Bumper Build

The daughters JKU needed a front bumper and she got a winch for her B-day- so I decided to get this done.

I will say that this design is based on several designs I have seen, but I wanted something unique so I decided to build it myself. Also, the price was right

    Goals were:

    Strong- check
    Light weight- fail
    Stylish- eye of the beholder
    Low Profile- check
    Price- free

First was the winch plate- I build this out of 1/4" and recessed it between the frame rails, this of course required relocating the vacuum pump and removing the factory crash bar

Next up was to relocate the vacuum pump, I almost just moved it back a couple inches, but ended up going under the hood as it cleans up the clutter under the front end and is less prone to damage.

This required a simple mounting plate, cutting and relocating of existing tubing and lengthening of the factory harness.- overall not too hard at all

With the winch mocked up, I then used some old fashioned CAD to figure out the lines of the bumper.

I really like the Poison Spyder bumper , but wanted the fair lead more vertical and not on the same plane as the leading edge of the bumper.

Overall, this design is not quite as simple as I wanted , but I think it came out OK, BTW, all 3/16" plate

    Mounting plates are 3/8"

I also like the look and function of a modest stinger, so I incorporated a low profile 2" tube to help protect the grill, also included are the obligatory gussets with speed holes

you might notice that I spliced the top plate ( I was too cheep to buy extra plate just to avoid this and my current stock was only 8" wide
Also , this will be sprayed with bedliner so I am confident it wont show- also not structural at all

Only think left now is the recovery points. I REALLY wanted something a little different than just 1" tabs like most bumpers. I have seen some trophy truck recovery points I liked in the past that were boxed and some that were gusseted, these I think are a good balance of the two styles and provides really good weld area over a standard tab

Also the mounting plates of this bumper have numerous angular ties to the front face plate, so strength should be really good.

3/8 tabs with 1/4" plating on both sides, 1/4 wing gussets, 7/8" through hole

Primed and shot with a leftover can of Rhino liner

texture came out a bit heavier than the tub of the JK, but I like it OK and should be low maintenance.

Also, I forgot to mention that after mounting the winch controls on top of the winch, I decided it was worth the extra effort to remote mount it under the hood. Cleaner looking and does not obstruct the grill, also I could not have removed the grill with the winch control on top as it was super close.

Wireless function seems to work fine even with the controller signal obstructed by the hood.
