Replace front ABS wheel speed sensor

    Tools required:
    Lug wrench (tire iron)
    21mm socket & wrench
    8mm hex wrench
    Front sensor - PN# 68003281AA

If your dash looks like this, you may need to replace a wheel speed sensor

Step 1: Jack up vehicle and remove tire

Step 2: Use 21mm socket wrench to remove 2 bolts on backside of caliper. Once caliper is removed, place on a bucket so the brake lines don't get damaged

Step 3: Once caliper is removed - take the rotor off and set aside

Step 4: Use 8mm hex to remove the screw holding in the sensor and pull sensor out. Mine ended up breaking (that’s my luck). I was able to screw a screw into the piece of sensor left in the hole and eventually got it out (1 broken screw, 2 broken drill bits, and a broken screw driver later – don’t ask!) The piece of sensor that was stuck came out in pieces for me, but I got it all.

Step 5: Follow the sensor harness and disconnect it from the brake line. It is held in by clips.

Step 6: Reach behind shock tower and feel where the plug for the harness is attached to the frame. It is held in by 2 plastic push in fasteners. Just pull those out from the frame so you can see the plug for the harness. The plug has a red plastic tab on it. I used a small straight screwdriver to push the red tab up. Now the plugs can be pulled apart.

Step 7: Insert the new sensor into the hole and screw into place using 8mm hex. Route the attached wire (following the old harnesses route) and connect it to the plug behind shock tower. Reattach new wire harness to existing clips to the brake line and to frame behind shock tower. I don’t have any pics of the reinstall because of all the trouble I had digging out the old sensor. Here is what the NEW sensor looks like though.

Step 8: Place rotor back onto studs. Mount the caliper back over the rotor and secure with bolts using 21mm socket wrench. Mount tire back on Jeep.

***You may need to disconnect the battery for a certain amount of time and/or take Jeep for a ride before codes will clear***

    Good Luck!!!

Great write-up....Call me stupid but is there just the one sensor for the entire vehicle for all 4 wheels?

    No one sensor per wheel.

Yeah, one sensor per wheel. Jbsmith44 did a good write up for the rear sensors. The front ones are definitely the hardest because the rotor has to come off to get to them. The rear sensors are easier because you do not even need to remove the tire. I replaced my rear without even jacking up the jeep.

How did you figure out which sensor was hooped? Just by phyically looking or grabbing the code???

Sorry, I just saw your reply....I'm not sure what you mean by "hooped". Someone on this forum (sorry I forget their name to give them credit) said to try turning key from Off position to On position (not run) 3 times and a code should be displayed in the odometer display. My code was U1417 and by searching the internet it was for left side wheel speed sensor. I replaced left front and left rear because it wasn't clear which one it was.
