Shifter Knob Removal - Manual Transmission & Transfer Case

Shifter Knob Removal - Manual Transmission & Transfer Case...

This was performed on a 2010 model but would assume its the same for 07-10 just proceed with caution just in case..

    Tools Needed:
    Small Flat Screwdriver
    10" Adjustable Wrench (crescent wrench)
    Small Ball Peen Hammer
    Clean Shop Rag..

    Optional:
Football Helmet with Full Face Guard..(my dentist recommend this option)

    Now

Use the small flat screwdriver to pop off the bottom caps on each shifter knob (pointed to with red arrows)

Then take your Adjustable Wrench and size it to just fit the arm of the shifter
use you shop rag between the shifter arm and your wrench to prevent scratching

    NOW..USE EXTREME CAUTION !!!
Put on your Optional Football Helmet or have a partner be prepared to catch the knob ??

use your Ball Peen Hammer and tap UP WARDS on the head of the wrench (NOT SUPER HARD) just enough to persuade it
    and POP it goes ....

Do the same for the transfer case knob and you are ready to install your favorite aftermarket knob..

I chose the Drake Offroad Black Billet Aluminum Set .. Great Product very pleased with them...(little chilly to handle in winter)

** Not Sure if this method will work on the Automatic Transmission Knob?? **

    Addition:

if you are installing the Drake Shifter set, you may find that the base of the shifter knob is slight larger than the shift arm... this can be corrected by applying a couple wraps of hockey tape to the arm (just enough to make it a tight fit, then lightly tap the knob with a rubber mallet and tighten the set screw .. this will eliminate any side to side movement causing the knob to come loose..

YUP... 2 wacks with the hammer and a quick trip to the ER for 3 stitches in upper lip and 1 loose tooth... the knob bounced off my face like those old days at school playing dodge ball

For the transfer case shift knob I have that too but on an automatic guessing them are the same. Whenever I use mine though it comes lose and won't stay tight. Do you have this problem?

    hey Brandon ..
did you notice the base of the drake shifter is a little larger than the shaft? all i did was apply a couple wraps of Hockey Tape so that when the shifter knob went on it was almost to tight then gave it a light tap down with a rubber mallet and tightened the set-screw as tight as i could without stripping it...

hope that helps yah out ...
