A Repository for Jeep Systems Override/Disable Procedures

I've posted this into the Electrical & Electronics forum because everything affected is electrical in nature. Community leaders, if this thread takes off, we may wish to make it a sticky just to keep it handy.

There are many different procedures "dances" that allow us to disable systems or notifications on our Jeeps. Owners may want to temporarily or permanently disable a system for various reasons. Maybe we don't want to hear the seat belt chime while we are cruising around on a hunting lease or the beach. Maybe you'd prefer to be in control of your Jeep's stability rather than have the Jeep do it for you. Maybe you've always had your oil changed by the dealership and now you do it yourself and you haven't figured out how to turn off the annoying wrong-cased CHAngE OIL notification. Whatever the item is, however it's done, here is the place to post up the applicable "dance", into a single repository, where everybody can find them. Sure some are easily found in our owners manuals, but some may be a bit more obscure, while others may be closely guarded secrets gleaned from sources in the know. If you know of one and haven't found it on here, post it up.

Also, please keep editorial comments to a minimum, only reporting errors found for a given dance. If you post a "dance" and someone finds an error, please edit your post to correct the problem. We want to keep this thread accurate for future generations of JK Freaks. Finally, please abstain from posting advice regarding the soundness of mind in disabling given items. We are all big boys and girls fully capable of making and living with our choices.

And remember to always read the warnings found in the owners manuals when disabling any of the vehicles safety systems.

Turning off the CHAngE OIL notification

1. Turn the ignition switch to the ON position (Do not start the engine).
2. Fully depress the accelerator pedal slowly three times within 10 seconds.
3. Turn the ignition switch to the OFF/LOCK position.

Permanently disabling the Electronic Stability Program (ESP)

1. Make sure that the steering wheel is centered, and the front wheels are straight.
2. Turn the igition to the ON position (Do not start the engine).
3. Set the transfer case to 4hi.
4. Set the parking brake.
5. Turn the steering wheel to the right, (clockwise) 180 degrees. The Jeep logo should be upside down at this point
6. Depress and hold the ESP button for 7 seconds. You may hear a chime at 5 seconds, and ESP OFF may show up on the instrument panel, but keep holding for 7 seconds. This is crucial to success of this procedure.
7. Release the ESP button.
8. Turn the steering wheel back to center (counter-clockwise) then turn the steering wheel to the left (counter-clockwise) 180 degrees. The Jeep logo should again be upside down at this point.
9. Depress and hold the ESP button for 7 seconds.
10. Turn the steering wheel to the right (clockwise) 180 degrees back to center. The Jeep logo will be right side up.
11. Depress and hold the ESP button for 7 seconds.
12. Turn Jeep off.

To verify a successfully completed sequence, turn on the Jeep again. You should see the ESP beacon illuminate and "ESP OFF" will appear in the odometer for 12 seconds and then extinguish. It will reappear every time you start your Jeep. The ESP beacon will remain illuminated as long as ESP if permanently disabled.

Repeating this procedure will re-enable the ESP for the vehicle.

Adjusting Throttle response:

1. Turn the ignition switch to the ON position (Do not start the engine).
2. Wait for all of the dash lights that normally come on at start up to go out.
3. Depress the gas pedal to the floor and back one time***
4. Turn the ignition switch to the OFF/LOCK position.

***the throttle response is adjusted based on how quickly or slowly you send the gas pedal to the floor and back... the quicker you floor it and let go, the faster the throttle response will be.

Also note that this is NOT a permanent adjustment, the ECM will continue to learn and adjust to your driving habit's. If you drive it like you stole it, it will last a while, if you hit 30 mins of traffic it will probably be back to normal in a day or two.

Oh, so clear now, my wife drives the Commander with the V8, It feels like a damn rocket when I get in to drive it, touchy pedal!!!!! Balls to the wall driver. Busted!!

This is good info, I knew about the oil light. We missed the seat belt chime though.

1) Turn the ignition on (do not start)
2) Buckle and unbuckle the seat belt (driver's) 3 times within 10 seconds
3) Turn off the ignition.

Your seatbelt buzzer should be disabled, but you'll still get the light on the dash.
Please remember to always use your seatbelt.

Wrangler JK '07-UP Error Codes
(It would be also nice to find out how to erase an Error Code from memory after have solved the problem that was triggering it)

To check your JK Codes, use this sequence on your ignition. Insert key and turn the ignition On-Off-On-Off then back to the On position and then notice the codes given in the odometer read-out.

This is good info, I knew about the oil light. We missed the seat belt chime though.

1) Turn the ignition on (do not start)
2) Buckle and unbuckle the seat belt (driver's) 3 times within 10 seconds
3) Turn off the ignition.




Your seatbelt buzzer should be disabled, but you'll still get the light on the dash.
Please remember to always use your seatbelt.
