Four Wheeler - Massive Tire Guide

Great article that gives you a basic overview of a good portion of the tire selection out there. Would love to see something like this on here with some more details, specifically weight!

This report left out several popular tires including those listed above and...
    • Nitto Terra Grappler
    • Cooper Discovery STT
    • Others?

No matter. The list of new tires is never ending and any report like this will always leave something out. But one has to wonder how all this fits together to determine the best overall product available for the items considered in the report. Well, kids I've done you all a HUGE favor. I compiled the list of tires and their relative ratings in the report. I then analyzed and ranked the tires based upon their ratings. In this case each condition was weighted the same. I didn't stop there though. No sir. I then chose each conditions as a key and then rated each tire against that key and the other secondary conditions. For example. For the street weighted key, I weighted the street condition (Wstreet) at 75% while each of the other conditions were weighted at 5%. For this scenario a given owner anticipates driving 75% of the time on the street. In doing this an individual can evaluate a given tire based upon the principal intended usage of that tire. For the street example, the idea is to allow someone who will target a primary condition such as street and allow them to look at the best overall tire based upon the fact that it is going to be a really good tire for street usage. According the the analysis, the best overall tire for the weighted street condition would be the Goodyear Silent Armor. I then went one step further and analyzed all the rankings and determined the overall best tire given all the conditions, and the reports ranking. I have the tires sorted by this overall ranking from 1 to 33. According to this analysis, the best overall tire is...The Goodyear MT/R with Kevlar. Have a look at the image below and see where your tire ranks. If your tire isn't on there, I'm sorry, it wasn't on the report. If the report is ever expanded to include other tires, then I'll see if I can't update the chart.

heh I had been looking over the same thing. the problem with their rating system is no real bias towards what is bad but usuable. for instance, a number of the tires ranked 1 on ice, but only a few actually had any mention on how terrible they handled on the ice. in the same vein, a number of the ATs scored well overall, with ratings of 2 on the mud, but then reading the actual review would reveal the tire was actually fairly weak over any type of terrain. the goodyear MT/r was the tire I was gunning for, and this article re-affirm my desire to get a set, but the ranking system vs the actual review seems a bit off

I don't know where or how they arrived at their ratings. I think there are other important factors missing from their report too like weight, cost, and life expectancy. I would also like to see road noise factored into the mix somehow.

I just analyzed what they provided. I did the analysis to try and quantitatively establish which tires would be better than others given certain criteria. All too often I hear people claiming their tire is the best. With this I figure I have some analytical basis to refute/affirm claims.
