Just installed the Midland GMRS in my jeep, removed my Cobra CB radio, and enjoying this radio.

CB has too many issues and upkeep, tuning/keeping it grounded, lack of range.

With my install, went with a different antenna; from my local radio shop

    That little Midland looks great!

I finished my CB install the other day. I thought about using my peaked and tuned Cobra 29 and I also had a Uniden 538W that would "blend in" with the interior a bit better since my Cobra has a lot of chrome. I wanted something smaller above the rearview mirror, so I ended up going with a Uniden 510 that I got off eBay for $36. It was new old stock. I'm running a 36" Firestik with a quick disconnect and aluminum spare tire mount. I did have a HD spring on it, but my SWR meter readings kept telling me I've got too much antenna. It got a little better when I ditched the spring. I ran my coax through the tailgate wire loom, behind all the carpet and plastic interior panels on the passenger side and up the A-pillar. I modified the Uniden mount so I could easily hang the CB from the roof hook thing.

That's the same spot I have my GMRS radio, but I used the Rugged Ridge mount. I had a Cobra 75 (all in one) that I managed to destroy by repeatedly transmitting with it into a shorted out antenna (oops). I never really liked it (too hard to hear). I'm going to figure out something else this spring. Not sure what that will be yet.

How do you like the Uniden 510xl ? I'm looking at getting this exact setup. Nice and compact above the mirror and not too flashy.

It's been working great! Perfect for the trails and the group I wheel with. On the highway it's not getting out nearly as much as my Cobra 29 and Wilson combo, but that was expected. I still tune in to ch19 to find out where dem bears are hiding... not that I speed much in the Jeep, but sometimes it's nice knowing what the truckers know. LOL.
