I'm gonna have to come experience my first Freak Fest. It'll also be my first time at Rausch. I'll be putting in for vacation soonHopefully the jeep will be a little more prepared by then.

What are your thoughts on ditching crappy CB radios and moving to something like FRS walkie-talkies? CB sucks.

I am all in on ditching CB.

I know a lot of guys I wheel with are switching to HAM radios
Ham is better, I agree (I hold an Extra class license), but requires taking a test and getting a license. It's a great hobby. FRS radios are cheap. I would even vote for GMRS as you can get more power and frequencies, but requires a license fee. It's not expensive, requires no test, just a formality.

I prefer the hand held radios I have a few I use in my group

The benefit of CB is most people have them, they are relatively inexpensive and are universal, which is great if you have different wheeling partners.

Most people have them because that's what they were told to get, not because the wanted one.
FRS radios are just as cheap, are FM (clearer) have better range, are universal, have privacy settings to prevent cross talk, no truckers .... I could go on.
Here's a set for $28. Find me a CB that cheap.
Here's a set from Motorola for $48
And for $130, you can replace your CB with a mobile radio plus antenna from Motorola.
My Cobra 75 was $90 without the antenna. I will likely keep CB, only because if I go back to a Jeep Jamboree, they still require them - hopefully that will change some day.
My point to this post, is if the Freak Fest organizers and trail guides said we are no longer using CB's, I would do a dance, everyone would simply go out and spend a few bucks on a new radio, and the world will be a happier place.
If I am fortunate enough to be selected as a trail guide, I will ask all members of my group to get FRS/GMRS radios.

I have a pretty good CB, but I'm a truck driver, lol. I haven't had a FRS radio in several years, I think that's what we had. We used them at Disney and I didn't think they were that good, but that was 29 years ago.

I didn't mean to demean truck drivers. My point was, we won't hear any cross talk from that fine group of Americans hauling all the crap we want to buy.![]()
