View Full Version : My slow ass JKUR build....

So I have decided to create a build thread to follow as I build my 2011 JKU Rubicon with a manual trans. I bought this new in August of 2011 and have added a few modest things since than. I sold my 2002 TJ Sport to buy this. Here are a few pics of the mods I have done thus far. Not pictured are Nitro axle sleeves and EVO C-gussets

Stock stubby with a Warn xd9000i winch. This pic is from the Jeeps first to trip to Moab on "Top of the World"
http://i805.photobucket.com/albums/yy338/jeeperman02/IMG_0733.jpg

Next mod was a Gobi Ranger rack, soon to be converted into a stealth rack.
http://i805.photobucket.com/albums/yy338/jeeperman02/Gobirack.jpg

I added a EVO oil pan skid. Also have the Protek skid system sitting in the garage, still debating whether I want to add this.
http://i805.photobucket.com/albums/yy338/jeeperman02/IMAG0053.jpg

This is the custom bumper I am working on. Going to add a stinger soon.
http://i805.photobucket.com/albums/yy338/jeeperman02/IMAG0031_zpsddb3791b.jpg

Plans for this build:
RK 2.5 Max travel with 5160 res shocks
35" GY Duratracs
Procomp 7028s
Syn line for the winch
Line X interior and eventually the exterior
Custom sliders and rear bumper
SPOD
CB
Trek Armor seat covers
Hemi (5 year plan)
PSC bolt in cage
Upgraded ball joints
F/R driveshafts
Upgraded axles
Probably more......

Thanks. My reservations with the EVO skids are that my expectations were a little high. The crossmember skid's fit is a little off. It rattles on the exhaust crossover and does not sit flush on the frame rails, the manual trans skid will have to be modified to fit because the tabs that slide over the transmission mount bolts do not line up. The oil pan skid fit perfect and is a nice skid. All of these issues will be addressed when I build my rock sliders though so I am not too worried about it. I will admit that the front bumper I am building took a lot of design cues from the PSC one so its not totally my design.

What do people think of the Procomp wheels? Any issues with the finish or quality?

Badpunkin

I can see where fitment issues would be disappointing. I'm also a bit surprised since EVO is notoriously well built. Where did you buy from? You might want to call them and see if they will work with you.

I'm running 17x9 Pro Comp 7069s. No issues. The matte black shows rock rash, but is easily touched up with rattle can.

Does anyone have any experience with the 5160 shocks? Looking for a shock that will perform well on and off-road without needing a kidney transplant....I also thought about Fox res but I heard they are more stiff than the 5160s. Kings are out of my budget....

Message Ludski about it, I know that he has them, and from what I can tell he loves them.

The 5160's will have about 1" more travel in them vs the same body sized 5100's other then that they are valved the same and will ride the same.

I've got procomp wheels and wouldn't have any hesitations about getting them again. The finish held up well until I set them on the rocks and used them to pull me through. They've got some rash now but I use the touch-up pen and it's not bad.

No corrosion or anything like that yet either, I've got the aluminum wheels with gloss black faces.

Thanks for the info on the wheels and shocks. Yeah I called EVO and they said they would send me a new one if I wanted so its really no big deal. They are a really good company and I would not hesitate to use their stuff in the future. It was just kind of an initial disappointment but they said they will make it right so no harm done.

Ordered the RK 2.5 Max Travel lift today. Still undecided about what shocks I want to run but the lift is on its way! Thanks Northridge for a great deal!

JKred
01-02-2013, 10:22 AM
Why not get a shock that is rebuildable and fully serviceable. Also, a reservoir shock will give you a little more piston (travel) than a regular shock (as dirtman pointed out with the 5100 compared to 5160) so you can run an appropriate length body and get more down travel.

I would get the lift on, then measure bumpstops vs available shock length space then pick shocks accordingly to get the most out of your setup.

mstrofpuppets
01-02-2013, 10:43 AM
That's kinda my plan right now. So far I have the shock choices down to 5160, Fox res, or the Rock Krawler RRD res. I would like a aluminum bodied shock as well and will most likely go with the RRD reservoir shocks.

JKred
01-02-2013, 11:35 AM
I know the RK RRD are rebuildable, the 5160 are not. Money saved if you ask me.

The RRD have I believe the largest piston shaft diameter. So sounds like you're thinking the right direction.

Are you keeping factory flares?

Duratracs, everyone who runs them likes them.

mstrofpuppets
02-10-2013, 11:56 PM
No, the protek crossmember and the manual trans skid are not on. I have the oil pan skid on now and it seems to be doing well. I will install the rest of them in few weeks along with my lift. The crossmember skid rattles on my exhaust. It also does not line up very well and takes a bit of work to get it bolted up. I am pretty sure I will have to modify the tranny skid to fit as well so it will work with my fumoto valve on my oil pan.

chevyjk33
02-15-2013, 11:12 AM
I have River Raider full skids and have continual problems with my tranny pan skid coming in contact with the exhaust and my tranny pan. They were fine on the road, but as soon as I went off-road, that tranny skid became a problem. I already dented one tranny pan (creased it really) with the skid and just saw it did it to my new pan again after the last trip. Its been off all winter and I have to figure out what to do with it before wheeling starts again. My stock cross-member look pretty rough too. That protek was one I was looking at. Is your under carriage rock-scarred or does it not line up with everything in the stock position? I hate to toss the other 3 skids in the system that do well for one bad one, but it may come to that.

BTW, nice choice of color!

mstrofpuppets
02-16-2013, 06:12 PM
No, my undercarriage is not beat up very badly. I can still get the skids to bolt up but its TIGHT. I have a manual trans and the skid for that is going to have to be modified to fit because it does not line up with the transmission bolts. I also have to modify it so I can run my fumoto valve on my oil pan so I dont have to take it off everytime I change my oil. I am using my sliders (not built yet) to space out my crossmember skid so it does not rattle on my exhaust. I am putting my lift on next week so I will update later with pics. Also, my custom bumper I am making will be painted next week as well and I will post pics of that too.

A little update. I just ordered synthetic line for my winch and Trek Armor seat covers. Planning on installing them and the lift on the 22nd and 23rd so I will post up some pics when done......did I mention this was a sloooooooooow build?

mstrofpuppets

Ok so I added some Trek Armor seat covers to the front. Super easy install and much better than the cheap ones I had on before.
http://i805.photobucket.com/albums/yy338/jeeperman02/IMAG0280_zps11c53144.jpg

I am also modifying my EVO oil pan skid so I can utilize my fumoto drain valve for cleaner oil changes. I have noticed that when using the Evo oil pan skid, oil will get between the skid and the pan when draining the oil. I made the hole bigger and removed the little "ears" from the mounting tabs. Sorry I don't have a before pic.
http://i805.photobucket.com/albums/yy338/jeeperman02/IMAG0282_zps7d834d8d.jpg

I also checked to make sure I had everything before I begin the RK 2.5 Max travel lift install next Tuesday. I will be running the stock tires for a while.

Lift is on! Drives great at 75 mph. No issues with the install, took me and 1 other guy 4.5 hours to install. The Fox shocks ride great. Don't have any flex pics yet. I need to get some wheel spacers since I am running the stock wheels and tires for a while. The rear swaybar links I believe would hit the inside of the wheel during flex, its pretty close. Here are some pics after the install.

Looks awesome! I saw you wanted DY Duratracs, I'm just saying from personal experience that the sidewalls are shit, they got a hole in mine after only rubbing on a hard kind of jagged root. Traction on them is amazing though and they're pretty heavy. I'd go with the Mickey's

mstrofpuppets
03-27-2013, 01:14 PM
Yeah I am not sure what tires or wheels I want right now and the stock M/Ts still have plenty of tread left on them and don't look too bad. The Mickey's look good and I have read good reviews on them. Would like a tire that does well on ice and hard packed snow as well. My synthetic line should be showing up today so I will post pics of that as well. Thanks!

mstrofpuppets
03-28-2013, 01:28 PM
So I had to order 1.5" wheel spacers so the rear swaybar links would not hit the stock wheels. Heading to Moab on the 11th so I'll have some pics from that trip to share.

Finally got my EVO protek skids installed. I have decided not to use the fumoto valve due to the lack of flow and me being over paranoid about it failing. The flow rate was about 1qt of oil every 2.5 mins. Here are some pics of the skids installed. Sorry for the crappy cell pics. If anyone wants more pics of any of the parts I have installed just let me know I and will get them posted or sent to you. Thanks!

Haven't updated my build thread in along time. I have not added anything to the Jeep but have decided to ditch the EVO Protek skid system in favor of the Synergy HD skid plates. My main reason for this this the fact that the EVO crossmember skid rattles and I have not been able to find a fix other than stacking 3 very thick washers between the skid and the frame/crossmember. This is not the ideal setup that I am looking for so hopefully the Synergy ones work out a bit better. I have started building my rock sliders to replace my factory Rubicon rock rails and should have some pics up soon. Future plans as of now are Teraflex HD tire carrier, 35" Duratracs, Line X interior and either make or buy a rear bumper.....

Thanks but I can't really take credit for the bumper design. It is pretty close to the PSC one with a little changes here and there.

I still need to install the Synergy ball joints and modify my skids to work with the sliders I built, shouldn't be too difficult. Rear Trek Armor seat covers are on. Went on really easy and didn't have any issues with the Velcro sticking to the seats during install.

OK so I installed my Synergy ball joints today.....well at least on the driver side. During install I ripped one of the boots and had to steal it from the ball joint from the passenger side. My lower ball joint on the driver side was really worn out. Let's say the install was time consuming but not overly hard and didn't require to much thought. I used a cheap Harbor Freight ball joint press and it did the job but I don't expect it will last after I do the passenger side. I am not a fan of cheater bars but had to use one during removal and install of the ball joints and the HF press was under a lot of torque and some of the threads got messed up. Also make sure the spacers that come with the press are properly aligned during removal and install, I kept having to reset them during the process. Make sure you have some heavy duty washers on hand as well to make adjustments to the spacing. I used YouTube for videos on the install but the one from dominion offroad was most helpful since he used the same press, although my removal and install time did not go as fast. Total time for install on just the driver side was 5 hours, this was all done with hand tools and it was the first time I had ever done ball joints. A quick drive around the block and the steering feels more solid we'll see how they do after break in. Hopefully this helps some one who is doing this install. Here are some pics.

So I attempted the passenger side and had to call it quits and put everything back together with the old ball joints still in. For future reference the harbor freight press will work just make sure everything is lined up nice and straight or the press with strip out although I am sure other ball joint presses with not fair any better. Also, I found it helpful to remove the grease boot on the new ball joints to prevent them from being torn during install :) learned that the hard way. I also found it helpful to have a big ass breaker bar to turn the press.

gear oil on the threads helps a lot as well.

Yeah I read that as well. Having some difficulty keeping the press straight on the ball joints, keeps getting off because of how the press rotates and hits the axle C causing it to twist.

Ordered EVO rock star skids for the rear shocks, a CB and some POR15 for my front and rear axles. Going to pull them out and paint them up.....I hate rust. The bedliner on my sliders is not holding up very well so I am going to have to touch them up as well. Not sure when I'll get the chance to install the rock stars but I'll post up some pics when done.

Installed my Cobra 75 wxst cb with a 4' firestix. Pretty straight forward, used a teraflex mount for the rear firestix. Ran the coax through the tailgate and under the carpet along the passenger side to the glove box. 18' was more than enough to do this. Ran the power wire through the hole under the passenger side dash cover. Grounded it to the bolt that is below the hole. Here are some pics. Still waiting on my versamount 2 to mount the actual cb. 48139481404814148142

So after a mild wheeling trip, I have noticed that my RK front and rear track bars hit my PS diff covers while flexing. I am running a 2.5" max travel with stock tires and bump stops. Not sure if I should be too concerned about this or not. I am thinking extended bump stops may help with this issue.

My front TB kissed my riddler for quite some time, but never caused any problems. Just a little paint scrape. Hi steer with a raised TB bracket took care of it.

How badly do yours make contact?

mstrofpuppets

It put about a 1" scrape on the upper part of the diff covers, just paint. I am only running a 2.5" lift so I do not believe I can run a high steer kit. I think they require at least a 3" lift. Ill have to mess with some bump stops to see if that helps at all. I should be running 35s after Christmas so I'll do the bump stops then unless anyone has a different idea. I may have to switch track bars to one that has more clearance.

So I can't install my EVO rock stars because my shocks are too short. I measured the exposed shock shaft and got 4.5". I then measured the space between the bumps tops and got a little over 6". I read on another page that you take the bumps top measurement and subtract it from the exposed shaft length to see if the EVOs will work. We'll I got a negative number. Still not sure what to do at this point......

Do you have any bump stop extensions at all on the rear? How much bigger are your planned 35" tires than what you have? Sorry that I'm coming in late.

No, stock bump stops and stock Rubicon tires. I did a little search on shocks last night and found that Fox makes 2 shocks for 1.5-3.5 lifts. One with 9.1" of travel and one with 10.1" of travel. I have the ones with 9.1" of travel. To be honest the whole shock up travel and down travel talk has me confused LOL. I've read a lot about shocks the last few weeks. My plan is to run either the Duratracs in a 315 or wait until the new BFG KO2 comes out and see how they do. My guess is that I'll need new shocks and about 2" of bump stop in the rear with the rock stars and 35s.

Well I have decided to upgrade to 35s. I really like the looks and first general impressions of the new BFG KO2. I am also considering the Duratrac but I am not sold on the sidewall. Mainly the design and lack of tread that runs over the shoulder and down the sidewall. I know they are a very popular tire and would work great for my application but it just doesn't feel like the right choice. Bad part is the BFG doesn't come out in a 35 until March 2015 according to their website so I'll have time to think this over a bunch. For wheels I am going with the Fuel Revolvers in 17x9 with 4.5"/-12mm back spacing. I will also be regearing to 4.88 with my manual trans. Not sure which brand yet but from what I hear they are all made over seas and just rebranded. Looking at Yukons right now though. Any insight on any of these.mods would be welcomed.

Well here is the newest addition to the Jeep. Went with them over the DTs because of the sidewall and I really like the tread design. Time will tell if they hold up. I plan to use them in Moab and Colorado so we'll see how they do. Will get them mounted up sometime this weekend and post some pics and initial review. The 5th tire wasn't in stock so it will be here on Monday. I ordered them through Discount Tire and my experience went really well with great prices and fast shipping.

So a lot has happened since installing the BFG KO2 tires. I recently installed Yukon 4.88 gears, hooked up my ARB compressor and broke a few things wheeling. I did the Morrison Jeep trail and the Shoshone lake trail, both in Wyoming. Both had tons of rocks. The KO2s performed very well and held up great in the rocks. The tread chucked a little but nothing noticeable. Aired down they did even better. Here are some pics of the adventures.http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160830/5165be9018957c1d2fed03d0c1c084ee.jpghttp://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160830/bb850637c9ffa10ee447adb9bc0d9030.jpghttp://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160830/84aa1529a194e90ea59427a0bde5d03d.jpghttp://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160830/84a9c935e20d9c06501ecbad54957ce4.jpghttp://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160830/b50920c1b7c1a72769861b13ddc8fdb2.jpghttp://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160830/b29badc010e9aeb3d88509d21d56500a.jpghttp://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160830/7f78db970debb3c3784e3b95ea05fd3e.jpg

Looks great, I like your build! How do you like the JCR tire carrier? I have the mid with version of your bumper and I have been wanting to do a tire carrier. On the fence of building my own, or just sucking it up and buying one from them. I like the ones that open with the door.

I really like it, had a few minor issues with it when I first got it but JCR took care of it no questions asked, so they get an A on customer service. No issues since then. I built my front bumper and it wasn't really any cheaper than buying one, maybe saved $100 over all. I like the carrier that swings open with the door and I installed their rotopax mount which works pretty well.

Well it's that time of year again to start thinking about how to outfit the Jeep for next year's wheeling season. My plan is to hit Black Bear Pass and a few other trails in CO. I'm looking at an sPOD for sure. There may be cheaper or better but I really like the spod. Also looking at upgrading my steering to the Yeti DL and tie rod. Synergy frame side track bar bracket, Artec axle side track bar bracket in the stock location or skid plates. That's pretty much what I have it narrowed down to. Any opinions?
